On this day 38 years ago, Philippe Petit awed New York City with an amazing feat: he walked a high wire at 1,386 feet in the air between the World Trade Center’s twin towers. At first a tense and vulnerable moment, he ultimately inspired poetic regard with his fearless invincibility, his ability to challenge and defy gravity, and his determination to do something simply for the sake of doing it even though it contradicted all practical reasoning. Watch the photo montage above or check out the documentary Man On Wire to learn more about Petit’s walk.
